The Newton Cup started its life as a challenge match in 2000 between Englishmen and Welshmen working together at Hyder Business Services in Cardiff. It soon became apparent that the English side were struggling for numbers so other nationalities joined in to form a Rest of the World side. The event was organised by Paul Newton, who captained the Rest of the World side against the Welsh side captained by Richard Bradshaw. The match was played at Dewstow Golf Club near Caldicot, with Wales coming out winners. The event was resurrected during the 2002 season with the Nomads Society by now having a full calendar of events of which this match was to become its centrepiece. Following the tragic death of its founder in 2003, the challenge match was renamed in his honour and has been played every year since. |
