Torrential rain spoilt the IV Newton Cup in the grand settings of Tracy Park near Bristol. The Saxons led by captain Matt Freeman took an emphatic victory with a 4 to 1 win in the morning pairs and an even greater walk-over in the afternoon singles by 9½ to 1½. To make matters worse for the Celts team, captain Gordon Wallace fell and broke his ankle in the muddy conditions and his presentation speech was handled by stand-in skipper Richard Rees. Despite all the tribulations, a good day was had by all (except Gordon), and after an excellent meal and presentation, the Celtic team will be looking forward to 2005 to regain the trophy on home soil. |

After weeks of nice sunny weather, the rain came down on the third annual challenge match between the Celts and the Saxons. Mark Pipes led the Celts side and played host to his opposing captain Matt Freeman. Respects were paid to the late Paul Newton who started this event. This competition has now been renamed in his name. Sixteen competitors took part at the Dewstow club, and a rain-lashed first stage of the event, the Greensome pairs saw a very competive battle for the 2-2 draw on the Valley course. All the matches went to the wire despite the conditions. Due to the late withdrawal of Rob Eadsforth (Saxons) through illness, young Dewstow junior captain, Ziggy Niblett swapped sides and deputised for the Saxons. The afternoon singles was played in much brighter conditions on the Park course which resulted in a 4 – 2 victory for the Saxons. Matt was awarded the trophy as captain of the visiting Saxons side who won the day 8 – 4. The day was ended with a few beers and a meal of curry and chips. |
